KNOT | Knowledge of Things: Reassessing the Indigenous American Heritage in Italy

is the website of the homonymous project whose aim is to map and study the Indigenous American cultural heritage preserved in Italian institutions. This website wants to be an open portal for everybody to access the Indigenous American heritage in Italy and discover its richness, both in terms of the amount of artifacts and of the many stories they can tell. It is our hope that scholars, students and the general public, both Indigenous and non Indigenous, will use the KNOT website as a starting point to build new relationships and to forge new stories.

Things are living knots of relations that connect people across time and space. Through these entanglements, they weave a tapestry of stories that – despite their often dissonant nature – call to be told and shared, so that a more respectful and decolonized future may take form.

The website gathers stories, facts and experiences about Indigenous American heritage preserved in Italian museums and institutions. It brings together research, documentation, and storytelling to make collections visible, connected, and accessible to a broad audience.

The HERITAGE section is organized into two complementary paths: ROUTES and MUSEUMS.

ROUTES invite visitors to explore the histories of selected artifacts or groups of objects through immersive scrollytelling narratives, to trace their biographies across time and space, highlighting their cultural meanings, trajectories, and contemporary relevance.

MUSEUMS provides an overview of Italian institutions that preserve Indigenous American material culture, spanning different regions and historical periods.
