The American collections are, for the most part, the result of donations. During the second half of the nineteenth century the citizens of Trento wished to take an active part in the creation of a Museo Civico, which was opened to the public in 1856 as an annex to the city library. Alongside works documenting the culture, history, and art of the local area, the Civic Museum also received unusual and \u201cexotic\u201d items donated to the municipality by inhabitants of Trento who were working abroad. At the end of the First World War the collections of the Museo Civico were transferred to the Museo Nazionale (today Castello del Buonconsiglio. Monumenti e collezioni provinciali), when Castello del Buonconsiglio ceased to serve as a barracks and was converted into a museum.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t
