The Museo Archeologico “Paolo Giovio”, which forms part of the Musei Civici di Como, was formally opened in 1897 in its present premises, the former residence of the Giovio family. The museum’s collections are predominantly archaeological in character, but they also include several interesting ethnographic nuclei, gathered mainly during the nineteenth century and originating from the Eastern Woodlands (USA), Mesoamerica (Mexico), Central America (Costa Rica and Nicaragua), Peru (northern coast), Paraguay (Chaco), Argentina (Chaco and Tierra del Fuego), and Brazil (Amazon and Mato Grosso regions).
